Host family qualifications to host an au pair

Thinking about welcoming an au pair into your home? Hosting an au pair is a rewarding experience that creates meaningful connections for both your family and your au pair.

Before getting started, you should make sure that your family meets these essential host requirements:

Au pairs can care for children between 3 months and 15 years old but are not permitted to care for infants under 3 months.

At least one parent or guardian must be fluent in English to support the au pair’s language and cultural exchange experience.

Hosting an au pair is more than just having childcare support — it’s about cultural exchange. The au pair should be welcomed into family life, included in meals, outings, and activities, and given a sense of belonging.

In addition to meeting the host family eligibility criteria, there are a few important commitments you’ll need to make once your au pair arrives.

You’ll need to provide your au pair with:

to ensure they have a comfortable space to call their own.

to maintain a healthy work-life balance.

In addition, the au pair must have at least 2 consecutive days off each week, with one of those days falling on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.

Which must meet the minimum wage requirements and be paid in full regardless of the number of childcare hours provided.

To recognise the commitment of our au pairs, you are asked to offer a completion bonus of $20 NZD per week, payable upon the successful completion of the agreed placement term.
