No, the word “au pair,” doesn’t mean nanny at all. It is pronounced “o pair” in French, and means “on par” or equal, denoting living on an equal basis in a reciprocal, caring relationship between the host family and the young person. Like an older sibling, the au pair is included in all family activities, unlike an “employee” of a nanny agency who might be excluded from family meals, holiday celebrations, and other activities. In Europe today, tens of thousands of families and au pairs continue this practical and mutually valuable tradition and the custom is spreading around the world.
Basically, anything related to children! You must have a minimum of 200 referenced hours. This can include babysitting, internships in daycare centres, schools, nurseries, midwives, children’s nurses, camp counsellors, sports coaches or tutoring. Caring for family members is a great experience and should be included on your Application, however it won’t be counted as childcare hours.
Yes! Almost all of our host families need help with the school run or driving the children to afternoon/weekend activities. If you are required to drive, your Host Family will provide vehicle insurance coverage for the Au Pair and have you listed as a driver on the car insurance policy. More information about driving will be provided by us after your are matched with a family.
Sometimes, an au pair may face challenges in their placement. If this happens, we’ll work with both you and your host family to try and resolve any issues. If a solution isn’t possible, we will provide assistance that may include placement with another Host Family.
